Giveaway: Moonrise Lullaby Celtic Harp CD (10 Copies!) $20 ARV {6/9; Worldwide}

Patricia Sereno is offering Anktangle readers a chance to win one of 10 copies of her CD Moonrise Lullaby, a value of $20. Moonrise Lullaby is a collection of soothing Celtic harp pieces designed to calm your baby into a peaceful sleep.

My thoughts and experiences:

I truly love this CD. Patricia Sereno really has a gift for writing lullabies! Each one has a unique sound and mood from the last, yet they all come together as a cohesive unit, set to rock your baby to sleep with the soft strings of the Celtic harp. The songs in Moonrise Lullaby flow smoothly from one to the next, with no abrupt interruptions or startling introductions which might wake Baby when she's in that in-between sleep stage.

I've enjoyed rocking Daniel to sleep at nap time while listening to this album. He is fairly picky about what types of sounds he'll tolerate during the early sleep stage, but Moonrise Lullaby goes over well even with my sensitive kiddo. I play it very softly over speakers in the room, and the notes of the lullabies float in over us as we rock in the glider together. I've found myself rocking with Daniel longer than usual lately (even after he's fast asleep), because I so much enjoy the peace and sense of calm that I feel while holding and breathing with him in that space.

Giveaway: Poetry of a Hobo Mama Parenting Poetry — $12 ARV — 2 WINNERS! {5.14; Worldwide}

This is a joint giveaway with Anktangle and Natural Parents Network. Please enter at one site only. Find the section marked "Win it!" for the mandatory entry and optional bonus entries.

Lauren of Hobo Mama is offering a giveaway of TWO copies of her parenting poetry book, Poetry of a Hobo Mama: The First Three Years. Each retails for $11.99, giving this giveaway a combined value of nearly $24.

Poetry of a Hobo Mama is a collection of poems by Lauren Wayne, inspired by the initial three years of parenting her firstborn son, Mikko.

About the book

I sling my baby like a bindle on my back,
tramping along the tracks
countless feet have worn before.

Poetry of a Hobo Mama contains three years' worth of parenting poetry, written from the time Lauren and her husband, Sam, were preparing for Mikko, through watching him grow to three years old. She has included poems that speak of their natural parenting journey — breastfeeding, the family bed, elimination communication, and natural birth among them.

The book is a combination of free verse and more traditional poetry forms, and the topics and tone run through all the variations the poet felt when writing them: the grief of miscarriage, the anticipation of trying to conceive, the upheaval of the newborn months, the joy of parenting, and the balance of motherhood and personal passion.

Until you move away

Pillow hog and space eater,

chubby legs kicking my thighs.

Starfish hands pushing my chest

and unh unh unh in the darkness

until I roll over and let you feed.

Dream interrupter, devourer of sleep,

you take while I wait

until you move away.

Lap hog and attention seeker,

sturdy body invading my space.

Starfish hand pulling my chin

to meet your gray-green eyes,

your chatter about octopi.

Poem interrupter, devourer of time,

you talk while I wait

until you move away.

Imagining a night with full sleep,

imagining a day with concentration,

uninterrupted, unrelenting,

unleavened.

Dreading the day

you move away.

My review

I cannot say enough about this book! Written by my dear friend Lauren, it chronicles three years on her path of motherhood. The collection includes poems about miscarriage, conception, pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding, cosleeping, babywearing, and all the monotony and hilarity that comes with becoming a parent.

I've been a fan of Lauren's writing since well before I knew her personally, because her writing is just so incredibly easy to relate to. There's no pretending and no putting on airs or avoiding the touchy and controversial subjects, only the reality of her life as a wife, mother, and woman. She reveals her true self through her words: the humor and wit, the wisdom and growth, even the taboo and painful parts.

Lauren's poetry (in particular) touches me deeply. I envy her ability to express such universal and personal feelings about parenthood and mothering with such beauty and fluidity. Her poetry reminds me of where I've been and gives me insights into where I've yet to go on my mothering journey. Reading her poems even inspires me to write more.

This is a beautiful, funny, truth-filled collection that I believe would resonate with any mother. The focus on Lauren's experiences as an attachment-focused parent gives it a unique perspective which any parent on the natural parenting spectrum could appreciate. But it's not just for the "crunchy" mama in your life; it's truly about the human experience: about life and love, about laughter and loss. It's about the joyfully heart-wrenching reality of loving someone as deeply and fully as a parent loves her child.

I'll leave you with this:

Separation Anxiety

Clinging like a monkey

and your wails following me like guilt

to the coffeeshop down the street,

where I write my novel

and count the minutes

till I pick you up again.

Will you become the child

who lets go of her mother's hand

without a backward glance

and runs to greet her friends?

And am I ready for you to?

About the author

Lauren WayneLauren Wayne lives and writes in the Pacific Northwestern USA, with her husband, Sam, and their two sweet boys: four-year-old Mikko (almost five, he would tell you!) and ten-month-old baby Alrik (who persistently makes the concerned face you see in the picture at right). She has been writing and publishing poetry for twenty-five years, but parenting has added even more inspiration. Poetry allows her to be honest about her emotional journey and to show an image, pin down a feeling, in a way that other writing does not.

Lauren blogs at Hobo Mama about natural and attachment parenting, and gives a behind-the-scenes look at writing at LaurenWayne.com. She co-hosts the monthly Carnival of Natural Parenting and is a cofounder of Natural Parents Network, a site that brings together attachment parents interested in a natural lifestyle.

Lauren and Mikko grace the book's cover — that's Lauren and Mikko breastfeeding in public on a Seattle beach when Mikko was just a few months old.

The Harvard Common Press is offering five lucky readers a giveaway of a copy of The Nursing Mother's Companion, a value of $14.95 each. The Nursing Mother's Companion, 6th Edition, an accessible and informative guide to breastfeeding for new and expecting mothers.

The Nursing Mother's Companion, 6th Edition, written by Kathleen Huggins, RN, MS, is an excellent basic guide to all things breastfeeding. It provides both general information for the new mother (nutrition, hydration, the benefits of breastfeeding for both mother and baby) and more specific information regarding special circumstances (nursing multiples, moms with diabetes and other health challenges, babies with special needs). The "Survival Guide" portions of the book address common breastfeeding challenges specific to certain age ranges (the first week; the first two months; months two through six, and months six through twelve). There is an informative chapter which talks about nursing the toddler, and revisits the subject of weaning (having introduced it in a previous chapter), and there is a whole section on breast pumps and pumping. The appendices include plenty of breastfeeding-friendly resources, the WHO growth charts for breastfed babies, and also information about the safety of drugs during breastfeeding.

Giveaway: Green Gamboni Jeans {8/9; US/Can} CLOSED

This giveaway is now CLOSED. Stay tuned to hear the winner announcement. Thank you all so much for entering!

This is a joint giveaway cross-posted on Anktangle and Natural Parents Network. You may enter at one site only. Please find the section marked “Win it!” for the mandatory main entry and optional bonus entries.

Green Gamboni is offering our readers a giveaway: one pair of organic cotton baby jeans, designed by a mama to fit well over all sizes and styles of diapers, especially cloth!

Green Gamboni jeans were created by Anne Loarie, a cloth-diapering mother who just couldn't seem to find a good pair of jeans that would fit over her little one's fluffy bum. She fantasized about the perfect fit, and Green Gamboni jeans were born! They're made right here in the US, in Northern California. The jeans are made of 98% GOTS Certified organic cotton denim with 2% stretch.

Green Gamboni jeans are available in five different adorable (and gender-neutral!) styles, designed to fit the varying needs of your little one. For instance, the pair I chose for Daniel is called the Hedgehog, and it's designed with reinforced knee panels. This helps to further protect and provide padding for the knees of a crawler or a baby who isn't totally steady on her feet yet. An additional bonus (I imagine) of the reinforced knee of this style is that it will help to keep the jeans in good shape for longer. With a crawler learning to walk, sometimes clothing can really take a beating! I can tell you, though, that Daniel has crawled around on the concrete sidewalk as well as in grass and dirt (and over rocks, etc.) while wearing these jeans, and not only did they not show even a tiny bit of wear, but they didn't stain. They also washed and dried very well; they still look brand-new after several washes, and they haven't shrunk at all.

I love these jeans! They're the first (and only) pair of jeans I've bought for Daniel so far. Early on in our cloth diapering journey, I figured out that denim baby clothes generally aren't made to fit over cloth diapers, so I just didn't bother trying to find a pair of jeans for him. Then I came across Green Gamboni, and I couldn't wait to try these on Daniel. They're super-cute, and I love the little mushroom logo embroidered on the ankle of the pants! The fabric is quite soft for a denim, but still very sturdy, and the 2% stretch makes it such that your kiddo won't be at all restricted in his movements by a stiff pair of jeans. I also really appreciate the attention to detail: the green stitching and embroidery are very nice touches, and the color of the denim is very rich. I like that the fly of these jeans has a snap (instead of a button) and no zipper. I think zippers on baby pants are totally unnecessary, and can also be a potential hazard for pinching little fingers and bellies.

I have to be honest and tell you that the only thing I didn't absolutely love about the jeans right off the bat was the price. For the purposes of this review, I was able to purchase the jeans at wholesale price, but I would not have normally been able to justify buying a new pair of these jeans for my son. I'm sure I'm not the only parent who is trying to keep extra spending to a minimum right now! I do sincerely believe, however, that you get what you pay for, and these jeans are no exception. They are durable, they're made of organic cotton, and they're made in the USA. There's no way to provide a product of this high quality that's made domestically, sustainably, and with fair wages for those making it, and still offer it at a discount price.

Here's what Anne of Green Gamboni has to say about pricing:
...I understand how...some people may feel that the jeans I am offering seem expensive. I feel you. But these jeans reflect the value of the natural materials that are sustainably farmed and processed so that nearby farming families’ drinking water is not contaminated with pesticides and indigo dye. These jeans reflect the craftsmanship of USA garment workers who take the time to craft clothing with their bare hands…not on a digitized industrial machine. These jeans reflect the fact that a small – TINY – business (and a stay at home mama) is trying to carve out a place in this world – and is competing with Walmart. We all vote with our dollars and when you purchase a pair of Green Gamboni jeans you can rest assured that you are supporting real living wages and environmental stewardship.
I couldn't have said it better myself! And I can certainly vouch for the quality of these jeans. After being able to test these out on Daniel, I know they'd be able to last through multiple children, and would be great to pass on to others when your children outgrow them. They are definitely worth the price. If you don't have multiple children to cycle through these jeans, Green Gamboni also has a program called GreenCycling, where you can return your kid's lightly used GG jeans when s/he outgrows them for a 5% discount on your next new pair, or you can purchase a used pair of GG jeans instead. This is a wonderful way to recycle your used GG jeans!

Overall, I think this is a wonderful product! The jeans are durable, adorable, and sustainably manufactured. What's more, I haven't found anything else like them on the market! Whether you use cloth diapers or not, if you're looking for a pair of jeans for your little one, these are the ones to buy.

Buy It!

Green Gamboni jeans run from $39-48, and are available in five different styles.

Size availability includes:

0-6mo; 7-17lbs
6-12mo; 17-22lbs
12-18mo; 22-27lbs
2T (18-24mo); 27-30lbs

Daniel is around 19lbs and 30" tall at 13 months old. The GG sizing recommendation is to go with the child's weight for best fit, but I went ahead and asked Anne which she thought would fit Daniel best, since he's tall and skinny. I ended up getting the 12-18 month size for him which fits just fine (they're a tad bit long on Daniel, with some room to grow, but they certainly don't fall down). They've fit well over all the different types of cloth diapers we have, including a cushy wool cover!

Modest Middles out to dinner
Modest Middles is offering our readers a giveaway of a Modest Middles nursing tank top, perfect for comfortably breastfeeding in public while still wearing your favorite nursing bra!

About Modest Middles

Modest Middles is a company started by Amy Maschue, a wife and mother of five young children. Like most great ideas, Modest Middles was hatched out of a need for something that just wasn't available. Amy says she came up with the idea because she couldn't "find a nursing shirt that looked good and kept me covered, while allowing me to easily access the nursing bra of my choice. I couldn't find it so I designed what I needed."

How it works:
You put on your favorite nursing bra, then put on your Modest Middle, then put any shirt on top.

The tank comes in three colors: nude, black, and white. I'd love to see Modest Middles come out with some other colors for some more variety. The fabric content is 93% modal, 7% spandex. Washing instructions are: "Wash in cold water. Lay flat to dry." I've found that this tank washes well and easily, and it even dries fairly fast!

What I Thought

I was so excited to review this tank top from Modest Middles. Since I started nursing my baby, I've been a fan of the "up and down" approach to staying (somewhat) covered while breastfeeding. (I wear a nursing tank top and another shirt, lift up my top shirt and pull down the tank top to nurse.) The concern for me has never been about exposing my breast in public, but rather that I don't want the whole world to see my belly and back when I'm nursing. Plus, in these colder months, it's nice to be a little more covered up! I bought expensive nursing tank tops, which I still love, but sometimes I wanted to wear a more supportive and flattering bra, while still keeping my belly covered.

My son nurses while I sit on a stack of rugs at IKEA.
Modest Middles kept me covered!
These tanks seem to be an especially great solution for those of us who don't fit well into "standard" size nursing tanks because of larger breasts. (I know I enjoy wearing a more supportive bra most days than any tank top can provide for my breasts, which have gotten much larger from pregnancy and nursing.) If you can't buy a comfortable nursing tank "off the rack," then this tank top will be perfect for your nursing tank top needs.
Sizing chart:
Size Small Modest Middle for Standard Shirt Size 0-6
Size Medium Modest Middle for Standard Shirt Size 8-12
Size Large Modest Middle for Standard Shirt Size 14-18
Size X-Large Modest Middle for Standard Shirt Size 18+
The site advises that if you're between sizes (and who of us nursing a baby doesn't have a body that's somewhat in flux?) to order the smaller size. I was skeptical about this at first, because I hate getting clothes that are too small. I ended up ordering a size Medium. When I received my Modest Middle and took it out of the packaging, I was sure I had gotten the wrong size; it looked so tiny! But then I put it on, and it fits great. (I think I just wasn't used to seeing a tank top without the chest portion of the fabric.) Also, the fabric is very stretchy, and it is meant to fit close to the body, to "hug" your middle. It comes all the way up to right under the band of my bra, so no belly, back, or side skin is showing.

I really like this tank top. It's very soft and stretchy, but it stays put and doesn't ride up throughout the day. I never have to pull it down or adjust it at all, and it has adjustable straps, so it will adapt to different torso lengths. The straps naturally sit on the outside of your bra strap (more toward your shoulder than your neck), so that could be an issue if you were wearing a thin-strapped tank top on top of your Modest Middle. As a solution to this, it's very easy to wrap the strap around your nursing bra strap to keep all the straps in line with each other. I found it more comfortable to wear this way all the time, regardless of what shirt I was wearing on top of the Modest Middle.

The only think I didn't like about it (and it's a minor thing) is that the straps are a little scratchy. I don't notice them very much, if at all, once I have all of my clothes on. Wrapping the strap around my bra clasp (as pictured above) does help to make the straps less noticeable.

Overall, I'm very pleased with my Modest Middle tank top. It's comfortable, the fabric is soft and stretchy, and it stays in place and helps me to feel comfortable nursing whenever and wherever, while still being able to wear whatever bra I want.

Inspired by Finn in box
Inspired By Finn is offering our readers a giveaway of a Baltic Amber necklace or bracelet that's the perfect size for a teething baby! Inspired By Finn is an online retailer of Baltic Amber and Hazelwood jewelery for the whole family. The store sells youth-size amber jewelery, including teething necklaces with either a magnetic or screw clasp, anklets, adult-sized necklaces, bracelets and anklets, and nursing necklaces. They also carry amber for back and knee pain, amber earrings, and a selection of youth and adult hazelwood necklaces.

Healing Benefits of Amber

The healing benefits of Baltic Amber are widely touted. Amber is not a stone, but fossilized tree resin, and it has been used as a traditional remedy for centuries. According to Wikipedia, "amber and extracts were used from the time of Hippocrates in ancient Greece for a wide variety of treatments through the Middle Ages and up until the early twentieth century. Prior to World War II, amber was widely used in Germany for teething problems. Amber's healing properties are sometimes attributed to succinic acid which occurs as an oxidation product on the surface of amber."

Inspired By Finn has lots of information on succinic acid, Baltic Amber, and the healing benefits of wearing amber jewelery (emphasis mine):

Baltic Amber is the most esteemed amber in the world, and the healing qualities of Baltic Amber make it unlike any other type of amber found in the world. When baltic amber is worn on the skin, the skin’s warmth releases trace amounts of healing oils from the amber. These oils contain succinic acid and are absorbed into the skin.

Baltic Amber has some of the highest concentrations of succinic acid found in nature, and this is what makes it so special. Succinic Acid is a natural component of plant and animal tissues, and its presence in the human body is beneficial in many ways.

How can Baltic Amber help us?
  • Pain Relief: Baltic Amber contains analgesic properties and helps take the edge off of many types of discomfort associated with dental issues, headaches, joint pain, etc.
  • Strengthens the body's immune system: In many different and subtle ways, succinic acid helps boost the body's own natural healing ability and immune system.
  • Restoring Energy: The human body naturally produces succinic acid. The salt of succinic acid (succinate) is one of the most active substances in the processes of cellular respiration and intercellular energy creation. Succinic acid restores oxygen and energy supply to depleted cells and helps the body return to a normal, functioning state. Succinate is a raw material and a catalyst in the Krebs Cycle which is one of our main sources of energy. During the Krebs Cycle carbohydrates, fats, and proteins are metabolized for energy.
  • Maintaining Wellness: When the human body reacts to stress, the body’s cells begin to use oxygen more quickly. Oxygen plays a central role in the intercellular creation of energy, and a lack of oxygen can result in feeling lethargic. Oxygen is alkaline-forming in the blood and maintaining a slightly alkaline blood ph helps keep us healthy. Whenever the body functions in a state of low oxygen, it is much more susceptible to illness.
  • To help break a cycle of (chronic) inflammation: Where chronic inflammation is present, disease lurks. When the body’s cells are chronically inflamed the human body’s immune system response is to increase production of free radicals. Chronic overproduction of free radicals results in inflammatory-related disease. Chronic inflammation is a common denominator of many seemingly unrelated diseases.

Personal Experiences

Inspired by Finn baby ankletI had the opportunity to review an amber teething necklace from Inspired By Finn. My son is six months old and has been having teething symptoms (fussiness, chewing, drooling, etc.) since he was around three months old. I couldn't wait to try out this necklace for me and my son! I chose a necklace with a screw clasp (instead of a magnetic one) and yellow round beads. I learned from my research about Baltic Amber that the lighter colored beads and the more opaque beads contain more succinic acid than the darker colored beads. I also learned that round beads—as opposed to the more angular "nuggets"—allow the amber to have more complete contact with the skin, thereby maximimizing the effects of the amber on the body.

I wasn't sure what I would think before I got it, but I really like the look of the amber necklace. They come in so many different colors and styles, and they're really adorable! My son wears his amber necklace two different ways, depending on his tolerance for me putting it on him that day: He can wear it around his neck and under his shirt, or wrapped around his ankle, under his sock. (It's important that the amber stay in constant contact with the skin for it to be able to release the oils.)

A few important safety notes:

Inspired by Finn back of neckThe teething necklace is meant to be worn—not played with, and not to be put in the mouth. Keep this in mind when measuring your child for the necklace. (Tips of measuring from Inspired By Finn here.) Some people prefer to buy a longer necklace, so their child can wear the necklace for a longer period of time, and some prefer it to be shorter to help prevent it from getting caught on anything. The necklace is designed to break when pulled hard enough, as a safety measure to prevent strangulation. It is not recommended that your child wear the necklace unsupervised or while sleeping. The necklace is knotted in between each bead, so that if it breaks, the beads will not all come sliding off and present a choking hazard. Take extra care with magnetic clasps, as swallowing magnets is extremely dangerous.

How did it work?

For my son, I found that the Baltic Amber necklace worked just as well as any other teething remedy we've tried (cold washcloth, teething tablets, clove oil, etc.). That is to say: I thought it worked some of the time, and it didn't work at other times. In the interest of full disclosure, though, my son is a "high needs" baby who has sensory processing issues. He's fussy (putting it lightly) a lot of the time, so he might not be the best child to provide an accurate review of the teething necklace.

Inspired by Finn adult braceletOut of curiosity one day, I put the necklace on myself, to see if it would help with the headache I was having. I forgot I was wearing it, and went back to what I was doing. Within about half an hour, I noticed that I was feeling pretty good. My headache had subsided, and my tailbone pain (which I've had almost all the time since I dislocated it while giving birth) had significantly diminished. I was blown away by the difference I felt when wearing the Baltic Amber!

We asked NPN followers on Facebook to tell us what your experiences with amber teething necklaces have been, and here's what some of you had to say:

Amber says: my 2 year old has had one since she was 1...worn daily ...we lost it for about a month and she was super moody! Have not taken it off since! My 5 month old has worn hers sine she was 1 month old...NO TEETH yet but one happy baby! Not sure if necklace causes that but they sure look cute!

Mandi says: Our son has worn his since he was 5 months and has four teeth and another on the way. The necklace works wonders...if we forget to put it on after a bath he is one very cranky little boy. Otherwise we have a very happy little baby!

Meredith says: Love our amber teething necklace!

Eco Fresh Baby says: I've worn baltic amber necklaces since I was 10 and never knew they could be more than a nice accessory. My little boy is always playing with them and now I'm wondering if maybe just maybe it could be the reason he's never ever required any relief for teething.

Cristina says: They're pretty, but never noticed that it made any difference for my son.

Andrea says: My daughter has 5 teeth. She drooled a bit but never was fussy :) Wish I had them with my other kids. I bought a second for my older daughter who has a cogenital hip defect that causes her incredible pain. She usually wakes at night crying from the pain. We had to give her tylenol and motrin every day! She now wears the necklace and a matching braclet. We rarely give her meds now! She never wakes up crying from pain!

Paige says: My daughter has had hers on since birth so she doesn't even notice it. We just bought two for the twins

Heather says: Positive!

Jessica says: We love them! It does not stop all symptoms of teething, however, it calms her and in turn calms us :)

Kari says: Lovelovelovelove!! My son has never woken up at night due to pain, has minimal drooling and a fairly consistent happy demeanor ever since we got his many months ago. I only know if he's got a new tooth when he's nursing and I finally feel it! :) I recommend them to everyone I hear complaining about teething.

Starr says:  I LOVE them!!! Wish I would have had one for my oldest two. My 7 month old has 'signs' of teething, some drooling and green stools but doesn't suffer pain. Totally fab... Also, I never take the necklace off, not for baths and not even at night. She's worn it since she was two months. Oh... and the beads are not only individually knotted but also small enough that if baby happens to get one in their mouths they will just swallow it - no choking!! Oh yes... adults can wear them as well for neck pain and headaches so they would work great for an older child cutting molars:-)

Molly says: My daughter cut her first two teeth without amber and she experienced all the usual teething pains. She cut the rest of her teeth with the necklace and you'd never suspect she was teething (aside from the increased drool). I wear one for heartburn. My MIL wears amber on her back (back strand from Inspired By Finn). She was hit by a car as a child and has had a sore back ever since. With the amber she wakes up every morning without a stiff back. My SIL wears one and her clasp recently broke and she said she noticed a difference without it - more headaches. My husband, GMIL, and my dad also wear amber. We swear by it and I think anyone who doesn't use amber is silly. ;)

So, there you have it! Many people swear by the healing properties of Baltic Amber. It's a safe alternative for those parents wanting to avoid medicating their children with topical anesthetics or over-the-counter pain relievers (like Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen) when teething pain gets bad. Amber can help adults and children alike, and everyone will look great wearing their amber jewelry!
