Friday Favorites: Preschool Play

Welcome to Friday favorites: a weekly linky for your favorite blog posts from the week co-hosted by Maya of Musings of a Marfan Mom and me!

In addition to the linky, I'm taking this opportunity each week to write a little bit about my favorite moments from the past week. I hope you'll feel inspired to leave a comment telling me about your favorite thing(s) that happened this week, too!

These are a few of my favorite things:

We had a full week and I'm feeling a bit under the weather, so today I'm focusing on one favorite thing from this week: Daniel's progress with preschool.

On Monday morning, Daniel's OT Lisa was able to come by his school to observe and help him out in the classroom. I was not there for most of that, but Daniel reported that he loved seeing and spending time with Lisa and that she was very helpful to him. His actual phrasing was, "I really love Lisa! She helps me out a lot... she helps me with playing." Daniel is so sweet sometimes I can hardly stand it!

Wednesday I walked to school to pick him up and I went outside with him to facilitate outside play time (which we had been skipping altogether until this week, due to overstimulation). Daniel was definitely still having trouble with interacting with the other kids, but I could tell that they were excited that he was out there with them, and several of them tried engaging him in play. After I explained it to him, he did accept a couple offers of play from other kids (a refill on pretend gas in the tricycle he was riding, for example) which was really fun to witness.

There are definitely some aspects of the transition to this new preschool that are not going as well, and Daniel's sensory challenges and developmental differences are so much more apparent in this kind of environment (among a larger group of neurotypical kids who are all around the same age). But I'm trying to maintain perspective that this is not an overnight kind of adjustment, and the goals we're aiming for may take years. The fact is, he's been going there for six weeks and we're already seeing more progress than expected. Who knows, maybe in a couple more weeks he will actually be comfortable there for the full (half) day without me coming to pick him up early! (Or maybe not, and that would be okay, too.)

What was one of your favorite moments from the week?
