About Wild Arbutus

Wild Arbutus is run by Melissa Vose, an artist, birth doula, and mama who loves to create beautiful things! She has four lovely children, ages eight, seven, three, and one. Her kids get to play with and thoroughly test out her crocheted creatures: they are the ultimate in quality control!

I really appreciate that Melissa chooses to use all-natural materials to make her hats, amigurumi creatures, and headbands, favoring soft, durable, and eco-friendly merino wool over synthetic yarns. (Items can also be made using cotton if you prefer it over wool.) Since all of Melissa's items can be made to your specifications, it's easy to get exactly what you want for your little ones from Wild Arbutus!

About the Hat

Melissa offered to create a custom knit hat for Daniel for this giveaway, and Daniel chose the hat with a whale. I sent Melissa his head measurement and she quickly whipped up this adorable blue and orange hat for us. The wool it's made of is soft and stretchy, with a little room to grow so it will definitely last through this year's cold weather.

I just love how cute this hat is on Daniel! When I gave it to him, he immediately pulled it over his head and flashed a huge smile.

Daniel really enjoys wearing hats and pulling things over his head and face (he even sleeps with a pillow over his head!) so after I gave him his new hat, of course he started pulling on it to get it down over his eyes. I was worried it would stretch out of shape and not fit well after all that tugging and rearranging, but it was no worse for the wear after a good pulling session. We've only had this hat for a short time, but I can already tell it is definitely kid-tested and durable enough to endure the (not-so-gentle) hands of my little one.

We haven't tried washing the hat yet, but it doesn't get very dirty just sitting on Daniel's head. Caring for wool is easy though: wash by hand or just wipe the surface with a damp cloth. The merino wool Melissa used in this hat is so soft and cozy, and comfy enough for my tactile-defensive son. He has some issues with clothing, but this hat doesn't bother him in the least: it just seems to make him feel happy.

I love how fun and whimsical Melissa's creations are: she is definitely a creative mama with a a great sense of humor and playfulness. Her original amigurumi toys are products of her and her kids' imaginations.

I keep eyeing the growing selection of toys in this shop and I just know Daniel would love to play with his very own snuggly nudibranch. The little monsters from Wild Arbutus are adorable, too—everything in this shop is so cute and fun!

If you or your kiddo likes to wear headbands, the newest items in the shop are beautiful crocheted wool headbands for all ages with fun details like a flower or a collection of vintage buttons. These handmade headbands would make really lovely gifts for people on your list this year—kids and adults alike.

Overall, I'm really very pleased with the hat Melissa of Wild Arbutus created for Daniel, and the interactions I had with her about it were all wonderful. I will definitely be visiting Wild Arbutus again in the future for gifts for loved ones!
