About Presence Parenting

Presence Parenting is the brainchild of Amy Phoenix, skilled meditation and spiritual healing facilitator. As well as being mother to five beautiful children, Amy is working on a degree in psychology, she writes for Natural Parents Network, and she offers nurturing presence sessions and parent coaching packages through Presence Parenting.

Presence Parenting is an incredible wealth of information, resources, and support with regards to meditation, self-reflection, and strategies for approaching parenting from a peaceful and gentle place.

In Amy's words, "Presence Parenting offers practical parenting information, insights, and parent-to-parent support to experience peace and create true personal, family, and world harmony. The work of Presence Parenting is compatible with all religions and also with those who do not embrace any type of religion as it is based on threads that support freedom, respect, responsibility, compassion, and love."

One thing I love about working with Amy Phoenix and Presence Parenting is that Amy readily admits to her own fallibility and shortcomings. In her letter "Diffusing Parent Anger — Moving from Control to Collaboration in Parenting," Amy describes her own personal journey of moving from allowing her anger to dictate her parenting style to learning how to act out of respect, trust, and kindness. And thus, "Presence Parenting was born out of the knowledge that people can change, parents can transform anger and aggression, kids respond to inner change on the part of the parent, and we hold inside the keys to our own freedom in the parent-child relationship and life."

About my Nurturing Presence Session

Amy and I met via video chat for a 60-minute Nurturing Presence Session. Before our session, Amy worked with me and my schedule to find a time to meet that worked best for both of us, which was really helpful since it's difficult for me to find time to talk (on phone or video) as a work-at-home parent. We arranged a time to meet on the weekend during nap time, which was great for both of us.

Here's where I have to admit that in my busy-ness I totally forgot about our meeting (in spite of the very helpful email reminders she sent and also the event on my calendar). I missed our session, and I felt awful! Amy was very understanding and gracious about my mistake and we rescheduled for the next weekend.

The nurturing presence session with Amy Phoenix was simply wonderful. We began with Amy describing a little bit about what the typical flow of the session is: we would start with a short relaxation meditation, and then talk about anything that came to the front of my mind once I was in that relaxed and centered place; we would continue this pattern until the session came to a close with another moment of meditative silence together. It took me a little while to settle in to the meditation, but Amy's calm voice helped me to get centered in my body and quiet my mind so that it was open for the experience.

As we moved through the session, I shared some of the things that were coming to my mind, and Amy was very skilled at listening to what I was saying and helping me to realize that sometimes the words (or the first concerns that popped up) weren't the underlying issues that were actually bothering me. She helped me to discover my own insights about things that I hadn't previously recognized in quite the same way. I was reminded of the importance of self-care (and even selfishness!) in my ability to effectively care for and give fully of myself to my family. I remembered how much I value and benefit from taking time for intentional breathing, meditation, and going within myself to recharge.

For me, the nurturing presence session was very therapeutic, and I came out of it feeling a bit like I would after a counseling session with my therapist. I think I felt that way simply because that was what I needed out of the session that particular day: it could've just as easily felt more like parent coaching or life/career coaching if that is what I had needed out of the experience in that moment. I think that's the beauty of this type of nurturing presence session: Amy holds the space for you to take exactly what you need out of it in any given moment.

A nurturing presence session from Presence Parenting would make an excellent gift for you or a loved one in your life who would like to further explore meditation, who could use some more intentional time for self-care, or who wants to grow and deepen understanding of self as a parent and as a person. Really, I can't think of anyone who wouldn't benefit from sitting down with Amy for a few moments to take some time to breathe, focus, and listen

I hope you'll check out Presence Parenting for practical parenting information, insights, and parent-to-parent support to experience peace and create true personal, family, and world harmony. I will definitely be returning to Amy Phoenix for future nurturing presence sessions. She is centered, caring, and intuitive: a beautiful combination of qualities that lends itself perfectly to guiding others as we uncover insights about ourselves and grow from there.
