Starbucks Anniversary

Not too many people know the whole story of when Jaymz and I got married...for the first time. It was four years ago today in a suburban strip mall, at a corner table (by the bathroom) at a Starbucks.

You see, we did this disjointed two-part wedding thing, with a (mostly secret) civil ceremony here in Oregon, followed by a church wedding in Ohio six months later. If I could go back and do it over now (with hindsight and all) I would make some very different decisions about the whole process. I've been working through those regrets again lately (I'm not exactly sure why), and I'm trying to change the things I can while letting go of the things that are long gone.

One part I wouldn't change a single thing about is our Starbucks wedding. We hadn't intended to have our civil ceremony in a Starbucks, but the judge suggested we meet up there, and the rest (as they say) is history. It was perfectly casual and strange, relaxed and quirky—extremely appropriate for our style as a couple.

When the shop staff realized what we were doing there, they gave us free coffee. After the papers were signed, we went out to dinner and had a small celebration with our two witnesses. We featured one of the photographs that was taken that night on our (other) wedding invitations; it was like an Easter egg that only we knew about.
Happy four years of marriage to Jaymz: my friend, my partner, my love. ♥

  1. Aw... congratulations. We also had a small and informal civil ceremony, with full intentions of having a 'real' wedding later, but it never happened. I guess our 'first' wedding two years before was the 'real' one, but it was us in a church making a promise to each other, with no celebrant, and no signing and just two friends as 'witnesses'. It's amazing when your reality is so different to the 'norm' and yet so special, isn't it?

    1. Yes! The "different" events in my life are definitely the ones that stand out most in my mind. I'm glad you had a similar special experience!

  2. Many congratulations! My wedding day was not the best or happiest day of my life. Until very recently (a few weeks ago) I regretted this. I actually just wrote about our story on my blog (http://itallivin.blogspot.com/2012/02/all-about-love.html). I'm slowly coming to terms marriage not being about a perfect day or event, but about the effort and love that comes out of living every day together. All the best to you.

    1. Every time I talk about my wedding regrets, at least one person listening expresses a similar sadness about her own wedding experience. It makes me wonder: how can we help this important life event to go better in the first place? (Going to go read your post now. =)

  3. Awww this is the sweetest thing!! Happy Anniversary! It's funny how the things that make the day truly "yours" are what you end up remembering! All the planned stuff I loved and it went exactly how I wanted but the one thing I'll never forget that I love so much is that we forgot to get Jon a boutineer to wear for the reception; so I ripped a rose from my bouquet with some baby's breath and pinned it to his suit jacket. It looks ragged in most of the photos and lots of people have asked us about it when looking at our album, but I just love it! It was such a great memory of me ripping off that rose and pinning it to him! Happy Starbucks Anniversary Honey... to you and Jaymz both!

  4. What sweet pictures! Our good friends got married when they were in Las Vegas on a business trip, then had their wedding that a couple of months later (it had already been planned). I think it's fun to have a little secret. :)

  5. Happy belated anniversary! We were another civil ceremony pre-wedding and I definitely have some mixed emotions about the events, but in the end I'm pretty happy about my husband. I'm glad you are about yours, too! You guys seem like you must have been, and must still be a really fun couple and I love the bits I have gathered from your story. The Starbucks portions definitely seems pretty special :)

  6. The entire time we were planning our wedding my goal was that at the end of the day, everyone was alive, and Walker and I was married. They were pretty easy goals, so I found it easy to be calm and relaxed about everything that happened at the wedding.
    Your hair is super cute in those pictures.

  7. I love your hair, too. :) I also love your wedding, and now I want to hear more about why the other parts weren't up to your expectations.

    Sam's commented frequently over the years that if we were to have our wedding again today, we would do it so much differently. Which is true, but I finally had to tell him he was hurting my feelings — because the wedding we had, at 22, was all I wanted at that point, and it was a beautiful day to me. For one thing, it meant we were married, which was the best part!

I personally doubt that our full soul energy can occupy a human body, let alone a new born baby. It can only embody a small percentage of its energy, depending on the choice the soul makes during a new lifetime. {tag: Yeezy White Outfit}
