Well, this has been quite a week! Today is the last day of
World Breastfeeding Week 2011, and I think it's been a fabulous one. Don't you?
Besides being a writing fool this week, Daniel and I attended the
Big Latch On yesterday for the second year in a row, and this year, Jaymz joined us. Though I went to the same location to participate,
last year there were more people in attendance. It was still a pretty darn good turnout (with 40 of us latched on at 10:30) and it was definitely a lot of fun to spend time with all those moms and their nurslings. (We're still waiting on the official tally from all the different locations in Portland.)
I ran into my friend Kelly (which was funny, because we had just been finalizing plans to go for a bike ride together later yesterday afternoon) and it was really nice to catch up with her. I also got to know a fellow mama who is visiting Portland from Brooklyn, NY, and decided to attend the Latch On event here. I remember last year, I remarked at all the different baby carriers that were on display in the room, and this time, someone approached me about mine. I was wearing Daniel in my Hotslings AP (adjustable pouch), which is one of my favorites for quick trips. I always like when someone comes up to me and asks about or comments on my baby carrier. It's such a great way to strike up a conversation!

This photo perfectly illustrates the atmosphere
in the room: loud, blurry, fast. With my kid
concentrating very hard on figuring something out. |
So, the Latch On was a really fun time, and I'll definitely go again next year if Daniel's still nursing then. He seemed to have fun playing with the new toys, and climbing all over people he didn't know (sorry folks!) until it was time to nurse for one minute. I think Jaymz liked the free pastries and coffee the best, and I can't say I blame him for that.
Today is special too, because
it's my birthday! I'm celebrating my birthday (mostly) away from the computer with Daniel and Jaymz. The plan is to make myself a gluten-free German chocolate cake and some
rattlesnake pasta and spend the day only doing things that are fun and (most importantly) restful. I'd like to also wish a
very happy birthday to my friend Dionna at
Code Name: Mama! Dionna was kind enough to host a
guest post of mine at her site yesterday.
I'm new to this Sunday Surf thing, but here goes! Here are some of the best things I've read this week (alright, a little over a week):

A perfect example of
the innate wisdom that our children have. A post on the
interconnectedness that is this life we lead. I really felt the peace
while reading it.

"My 6 year old daughter: Mom? Since everyone in
the world has a mom or a dad or a sister or brother or a friend… and
their friends have moms and dads and friends… then isn’t it like
everyone in the world is one whole giant family?"

Loved this short and
sweet guest post at TouchtoneZ from Dave at Folkabout Baby. What
wonderful examples of showing love from an aware, attached dad's
perspective!

"More than anything else, I want to teach my
daughter about love. Even if I accomplish nothing else as a parent, if
she learns love, I will know I have done my job well."

This is such a fun and
unique idea, to write your breastfeeding story in just 100 words. Can
you do it? There's still a little time left to take on Amber McCan's
challenge!

"There have been a few defining moments for me,
through our trying to conceive journey, and yesterday was absolutely one
of the magical ones I know I’ll never forget. Yesterday was the day I
realized the anger was gone. I waited for the jealousy, and grief to
sweep over me… but it just didn’t. Yesterday, I realized that I had
finally let go of the anger, jealousy and resentment that has been
holding me back and changed who I was before our struggle with
infertility."

I can totally relate to
this, as I often struggle with myself during yoga class to remain
present and be forgiving and gentle with my body. A great reminder to
keep your "practice in your everyday."

"To get downright dirty, the ugliest truth about
myself is that I sometimes compare myself to others and complain, out
loud, much more often than I’d like. You can imagine what goes on inside
my brain. A cycle of bitch, moan, repeat. Trust me, you don’t want get
in there. it’s a dark watery abyss."

An excellent post on
why asking mothers to cover up while nursing isn't ok. I am a strong
supporter of nursing in public, with whatever level of coverage makes
the mother and baby most comfortable!

"It seems like I hear more stories about mothers
being given a hard time for nursing in public in the summertime. Just
in the past month, there was the story about the mom on the bus, the mom
at the YMCA, and the mom at Whole Foods."

"So I’ve done it like 10,000 times, possibly a bit
more*. That’s about 200 days straight if you were to add up the hours I
have spent doing it. I’ve done it in all sorts of places too. Some
places like one might expect, at home, in the bedroom, on a lounger,
chair or couch. In the garden I’m sure plenty of times and at the table
too."
