A Very Happy Un-Birthday

Today is my half birthday!

I guess it might be a little silly to celebrate half birthdays, but I'm alright with that. I try to find any excuse to celebrate or to make an ordinary day a little extra special, because those kinds of things make me happy. I think to celebrate today, I might take Daniel with me to the gluten-free bakery and buy myself a cupcake. (Jaymz will be at work until very late this evening.)

I used to have a friend whose favorite holiday was Groundhog Day, which is one of those days that everyone knows about, but it isn't widely and actively celebrated. My half birthday falls pretty close to Groundhog Day, so I can't help but think about her when these days come around each year.

I'm curious, have you ever celebrated your half birthday? Are there any special days or holidays you celebrate that most people don't? Do you have any special rituals you practice or foods you make when you want to make an ordinary day into a fabulous day? I'd love to hear all about it!

On one of my first dates in college (I was a late bloomer), I brought the date a candy bar to celebrate his half-birthday. I must have asked when his birthday was because I knew, by coincidence, our date (which was definitely not great) fell on his half birthday. He didn't even realize that sort of thing exists! Ha!
My birthday is on Flag Day, so I like to say that I celebrate it. Truthfully I don't really celebrate it, really just my birthday, but I think about it a lot more than the average schmo. I've had birthday flag cakes or have worn flag themed shirts in the past. It's fun!
I think that at this point in my life I don't celebrate the big holidays enough. That will quickly change the older my 18-month-year-old gets! It's always fun to celebrate holidays with little kids.

  2. @Becky: Thank you very much! My sister's birthday is flag day, too! It's definitely one of those holidays you might not even know about unless it coincides with another special day. Thanks for telling me your stories. =)

My husband and I try to celebrate conception days... it started because we're Catholic, and pro-life, and we've both heard before, "If life begins at conception, why do we celebrate Jesus' BIRTHday?" The answer to which, of course, is that we do also have the feast of the Annunciation, which is Jesus' conception day... anyway, for fun we estimated our conception days and we try to have a special meal then, and maybe a small present. We're pretty relaxed about it though. We also sort of do name days, same idea.

  4. @Amy: Thank you! That is such an interesting idea to celebrate your own (estimated) conception date. Thanks for sharing!
